Questions to Ask Before Deciding to Take Part in a Research Study
Here are some questions you can ask your researcher to help you decide if you want to take part in a research study:
- Who is doing this research study and what question might it answer?
- How do I qualify for this research study?
- Who has reviewed and approved this research study?
- Who is paying for this study and what is their involvement?
- Whom do I contact for questions and information about the research study?
- How long will this research study last? How long will each study visit take?
- Will I have to make extra trips to the study center to participate?
- What follow-up will there be?
- How frequently will the research team contact me about the study?
- How do I end my participation in this research study if I change my mind?
- Will I be given the results of the study tests or procedures?
- What will happen to me at the end of the research study?
- What could happen to me, good or bad, if I take part in the research study?
- Are the risks short-term or long-term risks?
- What will the researchers do to minimize the risks?
- What other options or choices do I have if I decide not to take part in this research study?
- How will you protect the information I share with you?
- Who will find out that I am taking part in this research study?
- What could happen if my information were disclosed to people outside the study team and authorized research support?
- If the study involves biological specimen collection (such as blood, saliva, or hair), what will happen to any specimens that I give?
- Will I be charged any money or paid to be in this research study?
- If I decide to stop participating in the research study, will I still receive a payment?
- If I am injured while taking part in the study, will my medical expenses be covered?
- Will the research team cover the cost of travel to and from the study center?
- Will the research team pay for other study-related costs, such as childcare?
