Biosafety Overview for Processing COVID-19 Patient Samples - Tufts University

Online

Who should take this training?

This training is designed for Tufts University and HNRCA laboratory personnel handling patient samples that might contain SARS-CoV-2. The training explains the enhanced precautions that are needed to handle those specimens. The training also provides background information on SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Training description

This is an online training that can be accessed via the Tufts Learning Center. This training course consists of two modules or lessons.

  • SARS-CoV-2 Awareness Training: The training content includes: virology & epidemiology of highly pathogenic coronaviruses; known clinical features of coronaviruses; preventing laboratory exposures; and exposure response. There are questions embedded in the module, and completion of the entire module and obtaining a passing score on the questions is required to receive credit for the training.
  • Biosafety Overview for Processing COVID-19 Patient Samples: This training covers the CDC guidance as well as institutional guidance on the enhanced safety precautions for handling patient samples. This training does NOT cover Bloodborne Pathogens, and it is assumed that personnel have BBP Training prior to working with patient samples. Therefore this training focuses on enhancements beyond Universal Precautions. Training covers the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and engineering controls (biosafety cabinets, centrifuge safety cups), and internal transport of specimens.
