Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged with ensuring that all research, teaching, and training involving potentially biohazardous agents at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center is conducted in compliance with relevant regulations and with proper concern for the safety, the environment, and the surrounding communities.

IBC Personnel Requirements

Before personnel can begin work on an IBC registration, several requirements must be met:

  • Principal Investigators must complete the one-time PI Training on NIH Guidelines. This is a requirement to be a PI of an IBC registration.
  • All project personnel, including the PI, must complete Basic Biosafety training (BSL-1 or BSL-2) and any other specified training requirement. The specific training that is required is indicated on your approved IBC registration/amendment forms. More information about training requirements can be found in the IBC policy on Mandatory Biosafety Training and from the Biosafety Office.
  • All personnel listed on an IBC registration must be provided with and read the approved registration document as well as any subsequent amendments.
  • After completing the required training, personnel must be added to the IBC registration. To add personnel, the PI must complete a personnel form and email it to the IBC Office.

To remove personnel, the PI must email the IBC Office with the person’s name and the applicable IBC registration number from which the person should be removed.
