For over a year, the Health Sciences IRB and Social, Behavioral and Educational IRB Offices have been partnering to implement a new electronic system, eIRB.
The system supports IRB protocol submission and management for human subject research at both Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University. eIRB will facilitate the IRB review process for both offices, including initial review, continuing reviews, modifications and study close-out. The eIRB system will replace the paper processes and many of the data management systems currently used by the office. It will be used as the new way for research teams and IRB staff to collaborate on the IRB review process, including initial review, continuing reviews, modifications and study close-out.
eIRB offers the Tufts research community many benefits, including that it:
Supports end-to-end electronic workflow, reducing administrative burden for researchers
Increases transparency around review status
Improves communication between the IRB Offices, PI and study staff
Enhances data and reporting capabilities
Creates a shared space for PI and study staff to access study documents
Integrates protocol submission with CITI training records so CITI expiration dates are visible to the research team and easier to track
Provides a secure cloud-based system with single sign-on and submission from any location
The project is currently in the testing phase, with a go-live date at the end of September for a pilot set of users. eIRB is currently expected to be available institution-wide starting in calendar year 2020. In preparation for roll-out, an informational session will be held on each campus starting in November and a variety of training resources will be offered (please see below).
