The Social, Behavioral & Educational Research Institutional Review Board (SBER IRB) is a panel of Tufts' faculty, staff, and community members that reviews all human subject research to ensure the safety and welfare of research participants. The IRB ensures that any research study under its jurisdiction is in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. Only the IRB has the authority to approve human subject research.
The IRB is committed to helping promote research among students, faculty, and staff at Tufts University. Please contact us with questions regarding IRB proposals, operations, and any other information for which we can provide assistance.
Updates to the Common Rule - Effective January 21st, 2019
The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued updated regulations that oversee the conduct of human subjects research called the Common Rule. These new regulations will take effect January 21, 2019. Changes will include new exempt categories and updated processes for continuing review.
As part of this new update to the federal regulations our forms and procedures will change. Please keep an eye on this website as we will be updating it regularly with information pertinent to you and your research. Our first major update is providing a protocol template for exempt and committee review applications (found here!). While at this time both the old forms and this new template may be used for initial reviews, after January 21, we will only be accepting initial applications submitted on the new protocol template.
