Research Security Training

Research Security Training is an integral component of a Research Security Program.  The goal of one-hour Tufts Research Security Training is to raise awareness and ensure that risks are identified, raised, and addressed by the appropriate offices. This training is intended to meet the requirements in the National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33) and the CHIPS and Science Act.

Tufts' program is designed to provide the research community with important information about establishing and maintaining secure research practices at Tufts to better assure safe collaboration with peers, both domestic and international. Course participants will learn about federal regulations and Institute policies regarding research integrity and security, as well as the systems and services available at Tufts to support a robust and secure global research ecosystem.

Federal Requirements for PIs and Key Personnel (“Covered Individuals”)

Pursuant to NSPM-33 and 42 U.S.C. sec. 19234 of the CHIPS and Science Act, all “covered individuals” who are involved with federally- funded research will be required to complete research security training. "Covered individuals" (CIs) are those who contribute significantly to the scientific development or execution of a research and development project, including:

  • Principal Investigators (PIs)
  • Co-PIs
  • Senior/Key research personnel

These individuals have responsibility for the design, conduct and reporting of the research.

Please note, federal funding agencies have the option to add additional CIs, even on a project-by-project basis. Read the funding announcement and/or award terms carefully for any additional agency or project-specific CIs.

The first federal agency to implement this requirement is the Department of Energy (DOE). All principal investigators and key/senior personnel submitting new proposals to DOE from May 1, 2025 forward are required to complete the research security training within 12 months prior to proposal submission.

It is important to note that while the DOE is among the first to implement this requirement, all federal funding agencies will soon require Research Security training. We are currently awaiting further guidance from other federal funding agencies.
