Friedman Summit

The Friedman School Welcomes You to Participate in The 2018 Nutrition Data Summit!

Rationale for Summit

The nutrition field currently faces the universal challenge of exponentially increasing computational capabilities and data volumes. The impact of big data in this field is broad, and reaches several billion people through nutrition programming, interventions, and food systems modeling. However, despite various global nutrition-themed conferences, there lacks a single venue to assess the role of big data in nutrition science and policy. Thus, the first annual Nutrition Data Summit aims to bridge the gap between nutrition and data sciences among students and professionals.

Goals of Summit

The Summit will be held from October 4-6, 2018 at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy (located at 150 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA). As a student-led initiative, we aim to engage students from all universities in the Greater Boston area, and connect them to Friedman alumni, practitioners, nonprofits, and companies actively working in the field of nutrition data sciences. This event will feature interactive workshops on statistics and data visualization, debates on data challenges in nutrition, and a crisis simulation on nutrition-related humanitarian emergencies. Through this event we showcase both the methodological complexities of rigorous data analysis, as well as the real-world challenges and controversies in interdisciplinary nutrition practice. As such, discussions span across disciplinary boundaries to highlight methods other data science and computationally intensive fields, highlighting the four themes of this conference: connect, coordinate, collaborate, and create.
