This training is MANDATORY for anyone working with the agents described in an active IBC Biological Materials Registration and must be renewed every three years. Topics include risk assessments, hazards of agents, exposure routes, PPE, engineering controls, decontamination, spill response, exposure response, training requirements, and lab responsibilities.

*NOTE: The Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Standard is not covered in this training. For more information or to schedule a BBP training, contact Tufts EHS. If you are a Tufts Medical Center employee, please contact TMC’s EHS Office (617-636-3218) to discuss their BBP requirements.

Online Training

The online training is broken up into modules. Each person must take the NIH Guidelines Awareness Module and EITHER the Biosafety Level 1 Module OR the Biosafety Level 2 Module, depending on the Biosafety Level indicated in the approved IBC Registration. Each module has built-in questions throughout the presentation. You must complete the entire module to ensure that all questions have been answered.

If you are not sure whether you should take the BSL-1 or the BSL-2 Module, contact the IBC Office.

For Tufts/TMC users with Tufts credentials (Tufts UTLN / password), to create your registration profile, all you have to do is log in one time with your Tufts credentials at:

If you do not have a Tufts/TMC account, please contact the IBC Office and instructions on how to set up your account will be sent to you.

Biosafety Level 1 & NIH Guidelines Awareness Modules: This is required for personnel to work on an IBC registration approved at BSL-1 and should take about 60 minutes to complete. The modules can be found here.

Biosafety Level 2 & NIH Guidelines Awareness Modules: This is required for personnel to work on an IBC registration at BSL-2 and should take about 75 minutes to complete. NOTE: This module includes all the information in the BSL-1 module, so you do not need to take both. The modules can be found here.
