Exposure Response Plan

Information regarding exposures to a specific biohazardous agent can be found either on the Exposure Response Plans page on the IBC website or in your IBC Registration Form.

Getting Medical Assistance

For an emergency involving a large spill or medical emergency (heart attack, stroke, etc)

Call the campus police emergency number

For Tufts University, call (617) 627-6911 or 6-6911 from a campus phone
For Tufts Medical Center, call (617) 636-5100

For other accidents and incidents, follow these steps
    1. Report the accident/incident to your supervisor and the Biosafety Manager immediately.
    2. Seek medical attention for any exposures to hazardous materials. Information about Occupational Health Providers is listed below.
    3. Fill out an accident/incident report form. Follow the instructions on the form to submit the report, but send a copy to the Biosafety Manager as well.


Occupational Health Providers

TCSVM Occupational Medical Clinic (in Grafton)

Use this option if you are an employee or student on the Grafton campus.

A nurse is available two days a week for medical consultation and vaccinations: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 am -4 pm

For exposures that occur outside of business hours, contact the 24/7 Exposure Response Call Center

Tufts Medical Center (in Boston)

Use this option if you:

  • Have an exposure while working with laboratory animals on the Boston or Medford/Somerville campus
  • Are a student or employee with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (either use the Tufts Medical Center option, or follow the site-specific Exposure Control Plan)
  • Are a student or employee with the Tufts University School of Medicine
  • Work at the HNRCA

During business hours (Monday - Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm), contact Employee Health

Outside of business hours, go directly to Tufts Medical Center Emergency Department

Mt. Auburn Occupational Health (in Cambridge)

Use this option if you are an employee or student on the Boston or Medford/Somerville campus and do not fall into a category mentioned above.

During business hours, contact Mt. Auburn Occupational Health Clinic

  • Monday-Friday 8am to noon and 1pm to 4pm

  • Call to consult before visiting in person. You may be instructed to schedule an appointment, or you may be redirected to Mt. Auburn Hospital, which is at a different location.

Visit the Environmental Health and Safety website to view and complete the accident/incident report form. Please send a copy of the completed form to the Biosafety Manager.
