Sarah Marina, Laura Lucas, and Zoya Davis-Hamilton co-authored an article “The OAR Model for Research Administration: Ownership, Authority, and Responsibility” in NCURA Magazine May/June 2019 (vol. 51, No 3, pp. 17-18).
The OAR acronym stands for: Ownership – assuming a duty to coordinate and follow through to completion; Authority – the power to independently choose a course of action and make a decision without additional authorization; Responsibility – having an obligation to perform or complete a task and being accountable for something within one’s power/control. OAR empowers each person participating in a process to contribute proactively and to move the process forward to its successful conclusion, much like a rowing team moving swiftly together across an expanse of water.
