Dear Colleagues,

As the government shutdown continues, we thought it would be useful to remind everyone that projects funded by existing federal awards should continue working normally unless you hear otherwise. If there is no agency announcement to change the deadline, we should assume that all proposal deadlines remain unchanged.

Generally speaking:

  • Each federal agency handles the shutdown differently. It is important to follow the instructions of your particular funding agency.
  • It is not possible to obtain prior approvals from federal officials during the funding hiatus (including requests previously submitted and ones you need now to submit). The specific activities that are the subject of the prior approval should not be undertaken.
  • No new funding opportunities will be issued.
  • FastLane, Research.gov, and Grants.gov proposal preparation and submission are available; however, proposals will not be processed until normal operations resume.
  • Responses to any inquiries even if they are regarding proposal preparation, will be deferred until normal operations resume.
  • Advise your investigators to continue to submit on time any award reports that become due (even if there is no one at the agency to read it). If you are using an on-line agency reporting system to file the report and the system will not allow you to submit, please specifically note the date/time you attempted submission, and submit your report promptly after the funding hiatus is over.
