The Postdoctoral Scholars Handbook is intended to provide key information that Postdoctoral Scholars will need to get started, survive and thrive at Tufts University.
The benefits described in the handbook apply to Postdoctoral Scholars who work half time (17.5 hours per week) or greater. Postdoctoral Scholars who work less than half time are not eligible for benefit programs. Postdoctoral Scholars follow the non-exempt status employee benefits as stated in the Tufts Employee Handbook.

Access Blue New England Enhanced Value Plan – Effective September 1, 2018
Postdoctoral Scholars are required to enroll for individual coverage in the University’s postdoctoral health insurance plan or submit proof of comparable coverage in order to waive the university offered plan. The plan offered and administered by BCBSMA is the Access Blue New England Enhanced Value Plan, which is an HMO Plan. BCBSMA is a health maintenance organization that provides both routine medical and major medical insurance coverage. The cost of this health plan is provided at no cost to eligible Postdoctoral Scholars. Coverage for spouses, qualified same-sex domestic partners, and dependent family members is paid for in full by the Postdoctoral Scholar through payroll deduction.
Postdoctoral Scholars who are not paid through the payroll system should contact Cynthia Linton for information on how payments are made. The health insurance policy year runs September 1st – August 31st.
As a new hire you must enroll in benefits within 31 days of your date of hire using eServe. Your benefits will be effective on your date of hire. If you do not enroll within 31 days of your date of hire, participation in the benefit program will be limited to the next Open Enrollment or if you experience a Qualified Status Change. Coverage will be renewed each policy year unless a change is made during Open Enrollment or if you experience a Qualified Status Change.
Limited vision services are provided through the BCBSMA Health Insurance plan. Please refer to the health plan information for vision coverage.
Rates for the Policy Year September 1, 2018- August 31, 2019
*Individual coverage is provided as a free benefit to Postdoctoral Scholars. The Individual monthly rate of $472.38 has been deducted from the Two-Person and Family cost.

Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier Plan – Voluntary Plan
Postdoctoral Scholars are eligible to participate in the voluntary Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier Plan. This plan includes in and out-of-network coverage for preventive care and for other basic and major restorative services.
If you choose to enroll in the voluntary dental plan as a new hire, you must enroll in benefits within 31 days of your date of hire using eServe. Your benefits will be effective on your date of hire. Payment for the plan is processed by Payroll Deduction. You may add eligible dependent(s): spouses, qualified same-sex domestic partners, and dependent family members. If you do not enroll within 31 days of your date of hire, participation in the benefit program will be limited to the next Annual Benefits Open Enrollment or if you experience a Qualified Status Change. Coverage will be renewed each policy year unless a change is made during Annual Benefits Open Enrollment or if you experience a Qualified Status Change.
Individual Rate: $18.95 per pay period
Family Rate: $49.27 per pay period

Effective September 1, 2018, the health insurance vendor will change from Aetna to Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA.
Effective July 1, 2018, free services will no longer be available at the Tufts University Pre-Doctoral Dental Clinic.
Postdocs who choose to receive treatment at the Tufts University Pre-Doctoral Dental Clinic will be responsible to pay full Dental Clinic rates. For more information regarding the Tufts University Pre-Doctoral Dental Clinic and rates please visit http://dental.tufts.edu/patient-care/.
A voluntary dental insurance plan is also offered to Postdoctoral Scholars through Delta Dental. If you are not enrolled at this time, you need will need to wait to enroll until Open Enrollment in November 2018.
