Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center’s Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC) were established under the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules to provide local review and oversight of any research that is regulated by the NIH Guidelines. Tufts also added oversight of the following types of research to the jurisdiction of the IBCs.

  • Infectious agents
  • Biological toxins
  • Select agents
  • Human source materials, only when used for any of the following purposes:
    • delivery into live animals,
    • isolation of infectious agents, or
    • genetic manipulation or introduction of recombinant materials

Our IBCs are responsible for ensuring that all research with the materials listed above that is conducted at, or sponsored by, Tufts University or Tufts Medical Center is compliant with all relevant regulations and with proper concern for the safety of the personnel, the environment, and the surrounding communities.
