Any changes to a protocol must be Approved by the IACUC prior to implementation. These changes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Change or addition of a procedure
  • Increase in animal numbers
  • Change or addition of a location
  • Change or addition of a species
  • Addition of a Departure from the Guide

Some amendments include significant changes to the original protocol and therefore require Full Committee review. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Change in species
  • Addition of a Departure from the Guide
  • Addition of a Category E procedure
  • Increase in animal pain or distress

To notify the Committee of a proposed change to an Approved protocol, complete and submit a Protocol Amendment form.

***A pre-review by the IACUC office staff is strongly suggested for both the submission of protocols and amendments. This often saves time and work for the investigator.***

Change in Principal Investigator Amendment

It may become necessary to transfer an approved protocol to a new Principal Investigator. This transfer must be Approved by Full Committee review. To notify the Committee of a proposed change in Principal Investigator, submit the Change in PI form  to IACUC-office@tufts.edu. For more information, see the eligibility requirements  for Investigators on animal protocols.

Change in Location Amendment

The removal of any live animal from the animal facility must be described and justified in an approved IACUC protocol. If an amendment consists only of a change in location with no other revisions being made, a Supplement L form can be used instead of the traditional amendment form. Please see the IACUC Policy on Conducting Semiannual IACUC Inspections for more information.
