Tip of the Month

The Tufts Health Sciences IRB asks that research teams make every effort to write informed consent forms (ICFs) at an 8th grade reading level. Use the Flesch-Kincaid (FK) grade level readability test in Microsoft Word’s Spelling and Grammar check. The IRB understands that sometimes you need to use complicated medical terms, but these should be defined/explained using simple language. The Tufts Health Sciences IRB Office Staff can help you if you are having problems trying to keep ICF language at a low reading level.
